EverLogic uses VINquery to validate the VIN added to the Vehicle Inventory Form.
The digits of the VIN identifies a vehicle's origin and manufacturer (first three digits), describe its characteristics like body style and engine (digits 4-8), confirm its authenticity with a mathematical check digit (digit 9), reveal the model year (digit 10), specify the assembly plant (digit 11), and provide a unique serial number for the vehicle (digits 12-17).
Section 1: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) - Digits 1-3
-
- Digit 1: Indicates the country of origin. For example, 1, 4, or 5 means the vehicle was assembled in the United States, while J represents Japan.
- Digits 2-3: Identify the manufacturer and its division. For example, G for General Motors or F for Ford.
Section 2: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) - Digits 4-9
-
- Digits 4-8: Describe the vehicle's features, such as model, body type, and engine.
- Digit 9: This is the "check digit," a complex number generated from the rest of the VIN to verify the VIN's legitimacy and prevent fraud.
Section 3: Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) - Digits 10-17
-
- Digit 10: Represents the model year of the vehicle.
- Digit 11: Specifies the manufacturing plant where the vehicle was assembled.
- Digits 12-17: Form a unique sequential serial number for the vehicle, distinguishing it from other identical vehicles.
